Labour’s authoritarian Advent calendar is the gift that keeps on taking liberties.
First, it proposes digital ID, presented as the long-awaited solution to illegal working rather than as the enabler-in-chief for further tax grabs.
Then Labour turns its attention to slashing jury trials, with efficiency once again offered as justification. Have the nerve to challenge the prevailing orthodoxy? Your peers won’t get to determine your guilt. Instead, a single judge will.
Next, Labour increasingly encourages us to see young men as problems to be managed through sinister Minority Report-like “anti-misogyny” lessons to be introduced in schools. Ironically, these are the very same young men the Government is likely to call upon as it implores the country to “prepare for war”.
Most recently, just as Parliament broke for recess, the Government cynically “invited” leaders of local councils to consider postponing local elections in their areas. This, despite repeated assurances from our established political class that these elections would go ahead.
Among those reportedly under consideration are Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council and Eastleigh Borough Council, to name but a few in our county. This comes on top of the recent delay to next year’s mayoral elections. We are asked to believe that none of this has anything to do with political expediency, despite this reportedly being the least popular government in modern British history.
Our benevolent Labour overlords, we are told, want the best for us. More accurately, they want the best for themselves.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas – whilst you still can.
