Southampton’s last Premier League season was about as grim as it gets.
They came dangerously close to breaking the record for the lowest points total in top-flight history, shuffled through three different managers, and still finished rock bottom. Now, with Will Still—fresh off his stint at Lens—taking the reins, the club is desperate for a reset.
Bouncing straight back up is the target, but nobody at St Mary’s is under any illusions: the Championship is a slog, and the competition is fierce. Pre-season offered a mixed bag of results. Southampton kicked things off with a 2-1 win over Eastleigh before heading to Spain, where they drew with Castellon and lost to Espanyol.
Southamptons final warm up last weekend Brighton at home, where they clawed back from two goals down for a 2-2 draw thanks to Jay Robinson’s strike and Adam Armstrong’s penalty. It wasn’t perfect, but the late fightback has given the squad a lift heading into opening weekend and revealed some players who should be in the saints starting eleven.
The gulf in class should be too much. Either way we expect goals and hopefully a Southampton home win
