Its understood two men have been arrested after police allegedly found them with a knife about to approach anti-illegal migrant protesters outside the Southampton Highfield Hotel on Friday evening.
The arrests occurred on Highfield Lane at around 6pm, as demonstrators gathered to protest against the hotel’s use for temporary accommodation for illegal asylum seekers. According to witnesses at the scene, police acted swiftly as a car pulled up beside the protest.
“They were nicked in a car that pulled up right next to us— as the door opened and they were about to get out, the police pounced on the two occupants were both arrested. The southampton police did a great job and we’re sure they were about to attack us. It would’ve been horrendous,” said one protester, who did not wish to be named.
The incident comes after the anti-migrant hotel protesters were attacked last week by masked Antifia demonstrators and Police had to use force to restrain them. Another attack from the pro-asylum hotel protestors was caught on camera by YouTuber Laudits and has been viewed more than sixty thousand times online.
We’ve approached the Hampshire Constabulary for an update and comment. An anti-migrant hotel demonstrator added “we wish protestors on both sides of this issue to stay safe, people should be allowed to voice their opinion without fear of intimidation or violence.”
