Southampton Football Club and the Saints Foundation have once again shown their commitment to giving back, donating toys to Southampton City Council’s annual Toy Appeal for the sixth consecutive year. This enduring partnership underscores the club’s dedication to supporting families across the city, especially as the need grows during the festive season.
This year’s donation was marked by a visit from Men’s First Team players Oriol Romeu and Cameron Archer, who stepped up to lend a hand at the Toy Appeal’s bustling base. Greeting some of the 300-plus volunteers who run the operation, Romeu and Archer pitched in to help sort through the mountain of gifts collected – from bikes and fragrance gift sets to all-important gift vouchers and items most needed by teenagers.
Now in its 37th year, Southampton City Council’s Toy Appeal is a lifeline for many. Each holiday season, local people donate new toys and clothing, destined for young people up to the age of 18 who are supported by the Council’s children’s services, as well as families who are struggling financially. For children who might otherwise go without, the appeal ensures there’s a special present to open on Christmas morning.
Oriol Romeu spoke of the significance of the club’s annual involvement: “It’s great to be able to give back to the local community and help make Christmas special for children and families in need. Every toy donated counts, and we’re proud to be part of that.”
Councillor Amanda Barnes‑Andrews, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning at Southampton City Council, praised the Saints’ ongoing support: “We are deeply thankful to the players and staff at Southampton Football Club for their incredible generosity. Their support brings joy and hope to families who need it most, and it truly reflects the spirit of community that Southampton is proud of. As a council, we are committed to helping those in need, and these thoughtful donations will make a real difference. Together, we can ensure that every child experiences the magic and happiness of Christmas.”
The council has emphasised a particular need this year for gifts suitable for older children aged 12-18, especially young men – a group that is often overlooked in festive donations. The good news is, there’s still time for members of the public to chip in. Multiple drop-off points across the city, including Westquay Shopping Centre, are open for donations until 4pm on Monday 22nd December.
Those in Southampton willing to brighten a local child’s Christmas are encouraged to contribute what they can, as the city comes together once again to make sure no child misses out on a joyful Christmas morning.
