Southampton have stepped up their pursuit of Middlesbrough’s attacking midfielder Finn Azaz, with talks underway over a potential £12 million deal for the Republic of Ireland international, according to Daily Mail Sport.
The Saints see Azaz as a key figure to strengthen their midfield and boost their chances of an immediate return to the Premier League after last season’s Championship campaign. Azaz impressed in the Championship last term, netting 12 times in 45 appearances, marking himself out as a rising talent.
While Southampton focus on Azaz, Premier League clubs have intensified their interest in Saints’ own midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling. West Ham have reportedly made an improved bid for Fernandes, while Dibling continues to attract attention from top-flight sides.
Southampton manager Kieran McKenna is eager to reinforce his midfield options and had previously sought a loan deal for Newcastle United’s promising Lewis Miley. However, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has insisted on keeping Miley at St James’ Park for now.
Middlesbrough appear reluctant to part with both Azaz and Marley Hackney, suggesting that if Azaz departs, Hackney is unlikely to be allowed to leave as well. Notably, Azaz recently turned down a proposed £20 million move to Ipswich Town’s Portman Road, though the Championship club has not given up on signing him.
The ongoing transfer activity highlights Southampton’s determination to build a squad capable of bouncing straight back to the Premier League, while fending off Premier League interest in their own emerging talents.
