Southampton police are appealing for witnesses and information following a sexual assault on a teenage girl in broad daylight this week.
The incident took place at around 1:10pm on Wednesday, August 6, when a 17-year-old girl was approached by a man on Dean Road, heading in the direction of Bitterne Library. According to police, the man began by asking the girl inappropriate questions before pulling her down a flight of stairs into the subway underpass. There, he proceeded to touchi her inappropriately on the upper half of her body, over her clothing.
The assault was interrupted when members of the public entered the subway from the opposite end. Police say this intervention caused the suspect to flee the scene. Officers are urging anyone who may have entered the subway around this time, or who witnessed anything suspicious in the area, to come forward and assist with their investigation.
The suspect is described as being of South Asian appearance, with a skinny build, black hair, a black beard, and approximately 5ft 4ins tall. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt. Police are actively conducting enquiries in the area, including reviewing CCTV footage. They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone with dashcam or Ring doorbell footage from Dean Road or the surrounding area at the relevant time. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 44250353572.
