Southampton have bolstered their attacking ranks with the signing of winger Tom Fellows from West Bromwich Albion on a four-year deal. The move, which could eventually be worth £10 million, sees Fellows make the switch for an initial £8 million, with a further £2 million in potential add-ons.
Fellows, 22, came through the academy at West Brom and leaves the club having made 96 appearances in all competitions, notching up nine goals. The England Under-21 international enjoyed a standout season last year, finishing with 14 assists — the joint-highest tally in the Championship.
Speaking to the club website, Southampton’s group technical director Johannes Spors described Fellows as “a really exciting player, very direct with lots of pace who brings a fresh dynamism to our attacking line-up.” Spors added: “He is still very young, with his best years ahead of him to develop his game, but he already has valuable experience in the Championship and had an excellent year at West Brom last season. We are confident in his ability to help us immediately.”
Fellows becomes Southampton’s seventh signing of the transfer window, as the club looks to strengthen its bid for promotion. For his part, the winger says he is eager to get started: “It’s obviously a massive club and the ambition was clear to me: they want to get in the Premier League, and that’s a clear goal,” he said. “I’m looking forward to a new challenge for me at a new club, so I’ve got to test myself again and I’m looking forward to it.”
