Southampton’s city centre was transformed this Sunday afternoon as hundreds of people marched in solidarity with Palestine, their flags waving above a sea of supporters calling for peace. The event, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in partnership with the Muslim Council of Southampton, drew crowds that lined the route from Guildhall Square to Bargate.
The march, which began at 3:00pm on 31st August, saw participants of all ages and backgrounds join together in a peaceful demonstration. Organisers said the turnout reflected growing local support for justice in Palestine, as banners and placards urged an end to violence.
Among the speakers was Dr Parvin Damani MBE, former Mayor of Southampton, who addressed the crowd with a passionate plea for peace in Palestine. Dr Damani called for an immediate end to the bombing, highlighting the devastating toll on women and children.
“The loss of innocent lives must stop,” she told marchers gathered around Bargate. “We stand here united, not only as residents of Southampton but as global citizens calling for justice and dignity for the Palestinian people.” Going on to call it a “Historic day for Southampton.”
The event remained peaceful throughout, with stewards and police present to facilitate the march. Organisers from the Palestine Solidarity Southampton described the turnout as “inspiring,” noting that the community had come together to send a clear message for peace.
The Southampton Peace March is one of several similar demonstrations held across the UK in recent months, as campaigners continue to call for an end to the violence and for justice in Palestine.
