A prolific shoplifter who stole more than £1,600 worth of goods from Southampton stores has been sentenced to 52 weeks in prison.
James Robert Simpson, who has no fixed address, targeted multiple retailers across the city in a series of thefts spanning from April to November 2024. Southampton Magistrates Court heard yesterday that Simpson’s primary targets were chocolate, wine, and detergent.
The court was told that Simpson carried out 15 separate theft operations, repeatedly targeting Sainsbury’s on Bedford Place and the One Stop store on Park Road. His crime spree extended to several other locations, including the Asda petrol station on Millbrook Road West, Basset Green Road Co-op, Boots on Portswood High Street, and the One Stop store on Kendal Avenue.
Upon his release, Simpson will face strict restrictions under a Criminal Behaviour Order, barring him from entering any One Stop or Co-op store, along with other specific retailers he frequently targeted.
Southampton West Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Andy Proctor emphasized the serious nature of these crimes. “Shoplifting is not a victimless crime, and we understand the impact it has on businesses and those working in retail,” he said. “This blatant, selfish criminality is infuriating for us which is why we will continue our relentless pursuit of those repeatedly committing crime and causing distress.”
Inspector Proctor issued a stern warning to other potential offenders: “Thieves like Simpson should understand that their behaviour will not be tolerated and the impact that it has on its victims is not acceptable. We will track you down and do whatever is within our power to lock you up.”
The case highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to combat retail theft, which continues to affect businesses across Southampton. Simpson’s sentencing sends a clear message about the consequences of persistent shoplifting in the city.
