A protest in Southampton on Sunday, 31 August, took a violent turn when a bottle was thrown at a group carrying British flags in Guildhall Square, striking a 20-year-old woman.
Hampshire police confirmed the incident occurred during demonstrations involving Palestine campaigners and a group of pro-UK protestors, who gathered in the city centre waving St George and Union Jack flags. Officers quickly intervened to separate the groups and maintain order.
No injuries were reported, but police arrested a 23-year-old man from Southampton at the scene on suspicion of common assault.
A spokesperson for the Southampton Patriots, who were among the pro-UK demonstrators added: “During our peaceful protest a coward came in behind us and threw a full bottle of drink into our group which contained women and children. We managed to detain the hooligan who threw it until police were able to intervene and arrest him. The violence dished out by the so-called peaceful-left protestors seems to go largely unreported.”
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police told the Southampton Daily Echo: “The matter has been resolved through community resolution.”
The pro-UK demonstrators gathered at Southamptons Bargate before marching to the Guildhall. The pro-Palestine campaigners marched from Guildhall Square to the Bargate, before returning to the MAST Mayflower Theatre, opposite the square. There was a heavy police presence throughout the event.
