Hampshire Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man connected to two shoplifting incidents at an Aldi supermarket in Southampton.
The thefts occurred at the Auckland Road store over a four-day period in early November, with the suspect targeting high-value food items and seasonal goods.
In the first incident on Saturday 2nd November, the perpetrator made off with more than £200 worth of groceries, including meat, cheese and pasta products. Just three days later, on Tuesday 5th November, the same store was targeted again when advent calendars valued at £172 were stolen.
Officers investigating the cases have now released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak with in connection to both incidents. The individual was captured on security cameras in the vicinity at the time of the thefts.
Detective Constable Sarah Matthews from Hampshire Constabulary said: “We are keen to identify this individual as part of our ongoing investigation into these shoplifting offences. While some may view shoplifting as a minor crime, the cumulative impact of such thefts has serious consequences for retailers and, ultimately, their customers through increased prices.”
The police are urging anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images, or has any information about either incident, to come forward. Members of the public can assist the investigation by calling 101 and quoting reference number 44240483643.
Alternatively, witnesses can provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The incidents come amid growing concerns about retail crime in Southampton, with local businesses reporting an uptick in shoplifting cases during the cost-of-living crisis.
Police have reminded the public that shoplifting remains a serious offence that can carry a prison sentence of up to six months for a single incident, with repeat offenders potentially facing longer terms.
