A YouTuber was reportedly attacked by masked protesters outside the Highfield House Hotel in Southampton on Sunday, 17 August, as tensions flared between rival groups over a planned anti-migrant demonstration.
The YouTuber was attacked on Abbotts Way in Southampton as he attempted to walk to join the protest. Footage posted online shows the YouTuber, known as Laudits, being confronted and struck by a group of masked hooligans as he made his way to the protest site. Videos appear to capture several people rushing towards Laudits and making physical contact before police are forced to intervene for his safety.
Witnesses described the attackers as “anti-racism protestors” affiliated with the group Stand Up To Racism. Some on the scene also alleged links to the American Antifa movement, though these claims have not been independently verified. The masked group reportedly sought to intimidate anti-migrant protestors and disrupt the gathering.
Hampshire Constabulary deployed officers were deployed in force and stepped in on multiple occasions to contain the ‘anti racism’ protestors who wore masks throughout and seemed intent on causing issues.. Police confirmed that “reasonable force” was used to contain the incident and prevent further violence. No arrests were made at the scene, but authorities said they are reviewing video footage as part of an ongoing investigation.
Concealing one’s identity at public demonstrations is restricted under certain UK laws, though all individuals in the masked group reportedly kept their faces covered. Despite the disruption, the anti-migrant protest proceeded, with organisers estimating a turnout in the hundreds and crediting the large numbers for ensuring participants’ safety.
Some residents and demonstrators raised concerns about the intimidation tactics employed by masked counter-protesters, suggesting it could have a chilling effect on public debate. Others commended the police response and said strength in numbers helped maintain order.
The events in Southampton come amid a growing pattern of confrontation at protests across the UK, as both sides pledge to continue their campaigns.
