A tense stand-off unfolded outside the Highfield House Hotel in Southampton on Sunday, 17 August, as masked counter-protesters attempted to disrupt an anti-migrant hotel demonstration from setting up near the premises. They attempted to storm the organisers while they setup their stand and music system before the protest had even begun, but Hampshire Police were quick to intervene and use force to hold back the marauding masked hooligans.
According to witnesses, the group described by some as “anti-racism protestors” and believed by others on the scene to be affiliated with the American Antifa movement, arrived wearing masks and sought to confront those setting up the anti-migrant protest. The situation quickly escalated, with reports of scuffles and attempts to break through police lines.
Hampshire Constabulary officers were present in significant numbers and intervened to separate the two sides. Police confirmed that “reasonable force” was used to contain the situation and prevent violence from spreading. Despite the hooligans wearing masks no arrests were made, but officers continue to review footage from the incident.
All individuals in the masked group reportedly concealed their identities, a practice restricted under certain UK laws governing public demonstrations. Despite the disruption, the anti-migrant protest went ahead as planned, with organisers claiming that the turnout estimated in the hundreds helped ensure participants’ safety.
Some local residents and protestors expressed concern about the intimidation tactics used by masked individuals, with several saying it discouraged open debate. Others, however, praised the police response and suggested that safety in numbers provided reassurance to those wishing to demonstrate.
The events in Southampton reflect a broader trend of heightened tension at protests across the country, with both sides vowing to continue their campaigns in the weeks ahead.
