Southampton police have seized nearly £60,000 worth of illegal tobacco, vapes, and alcohol in a significant operation targeting organised crime and child exploitation in the Portswood area.
The raid, conducted by Southampton’s Area Crime Team at a premises on Lodge Road, resulted in the confiscation of illegal products valued at £57,734. The seized items, including vapes, tobacco, cigarettes, and vodka, have been transferred to Southampton City Council’s Trading Standards Department for further investigation.
Detective Sergeant Nicola Rose from the Western Area Crime Team described the operation as “a positive step” in their ongoing battle against organised crime groups in Southampton. “The sale of counterfeit and illegal goods can be linked to organised crime and child exploitation, which is a priority for us,” she explained.
The operation forms part of a broader initiative between police and Southampton City Council’s Trading Standards department to combat illegal tobacco products and vapes. The Trading Standards team regularly conducts test purchases to identify retailers selling these products to minors.
DS Rose emphasised the importance of community vigilance in identifying signs of child exploitation. “We need to ensure that those exposed to exploitation, criminality and harm are offered the support and safeguarding that they need. The protection of our young people and children is at the heart of everything we do.”
Police enquiries into the seizure are ongoing. Members of the public can report suspicious activity or signs of child exploitation by calling 101 or through the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website. Anonymous reports can be made via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Young people concerned about exploitation can contact Childline on 0800 1111 or seek help from trusted adults such as teachers, healthcare professionals, or local police officers.
