A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in Portswood late last night. Officers have arrested four people in connection with the incident, which took place on Belmont Road shortly before 11.30pm on December 3rd.
Police were called to reports of an altercation, where it was said that two men had been assaulted by an unknown individual. Upon arrival, officers discovered several people at the scene and quickly identified that the unknown man had sustained a serious injury to his chest. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man — who has not yet been identified — was pronounced dead at the scene.
A significant police presence remains on Belmont Road today, as officers conduct further enquiries and carry out additional patrols to reassure the community. As part of their initial investigation, detectives have arrested a 22-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, a 51-year-old man, and a 52-year-old woman, all from Southampton, on suspicion of murder. All four remain in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Rebekah Bartholomew, who is leading the investigation, said: “I understand this news and the road closures we have in place will be concerning for local residents, and I want to thank you all for your understanding and patience while we carry out our enquiries. We are in the early stages of our investigation, and my team are working hard to piece together the exact circumstances and understand the moments that led up to the call to us. At this time, I believe this to be an isolated incident, but if you do have any concerns then please do not hesitate to speak with officers who will be in and around Belmont Road throughout the coming days.”
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information, particularly CCTV or other video footage from the Belmont Road area between 11pm and 11.30pm last night, to come forward. Anyone who may be able to help is urged to speak with officers in the area, call 101 quoting reference 44250545892, or submit information online via the police website.
