Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has held crucial talks with Tesla billionaire Elon Musk at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-lago Florida estate, fuelling speculation about potential major funding for the right-wing party. Farage later posted a photo of the three on X.
The meeting, which took place at Mar-a-Lago, was attended by Reform UK’s newly appointed treasurer Nick Candy, with Farage later sharing a photograph of the trio accompanied by the pointed caption “Britain needs Reform.”In a joint statement that hints at deepening transatlantic political ties, Farage and Candy revealed: “We had a great meeting with Elon Musk for an hour yesterday. We learned a great deal about the Trump ground game and will have ongoing discussions on other areas.”
The encounter gains particular significance given Musk’s substantial political influence in America, where he emerged as the largest donor in the 2024 US election cycle, contributing at least $277 million to Republican causes. Sources suggest he could be considering a $100 million (£79m) donation to Reform UK, though this remains unconfirmed.
The meeting also revealed Musk’s expanding role in American politics, with confirmation that he is “to play a major role in the incoming Trump administration” as co-head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at streamlining state operations.
Earlier this month, Musk publicly engaged with Farage on X (formerly Twitter), enquiring about Reform UK’s next “electoral opportunity,” to which Farage responded with details about May’s local elections.
The timing is particularly significant as it follows Candy’s recent appointment as Reform UK’s treasurer. The property tycoon, who recently defected from the Conservative Party, has set ambitious fundraising targets, pledging to exceed the £25-40 million traditionally raised by other political parties during General Election campaigns.
“The special relationship is alive and well,” declared Farage, thanking former President Trump for hosting what he termed a “historic meeting” at his Florida residence.
The developments mark a significant moment in British politics, potentially signalling Reform UK’s emergence as a more financially robust political force ahead of upcoming electoral contests. However, any substantial foreign donations would need to navigate strict UK electoral funding regulations.
With Candy’s ambitious fundraising targets and Musk’s demonstrated willingness to support right-wing political causes, Reform UK appears poised for a potential financial breakthrough that could reshape British political dynamics in the coming months.
