The UK Independence Party (UKIP) prepares for a demonstration on Saturday in Southampton against what is says are out of control illegal immigration levels on January 25th. The protest, led by interim UKIP leader Nick Tenconi, is set to commence at the Bargate at 1 pm, with organisers calling it part of their “take our city back” campaign.
Tenconi, who made headlines last year for his humanitarian work delivering aid to Ukraine, has positioned the demonstration as specifically targeting illegal migration rather than legal immigration channels. The 34-year-old party leader, who also serves as Chief Operating Officer of Turning Point UK, has been vocal about distinguishing between legal and illegal migration in his recent public appearances.
Local authorities are preparing for a significant turnout, with both UKIP supporters and counter-protesters expected to attend. Southampton Stand Up To Racism has already announced plans for a counter-demonstration, highlighting the city’s long-standing tradition of welcoming newcomers.
“Southampton has always been a city of diversity and inclusion,” says Nikki Walters, chair of Southampton Action, who has condemned the planned protest. Counter-protesters are expected to gather at Dunkirk Car Park, with organisers calling for “workers’ unity and solidarity.”
The demonstration comes at a time when Tenconi’s profile within UKIP has been rising since assuming the interim leadership position in June 2024. His recent humanitarian missions to Ukraine, where he personally drove aid supplies to front-line areas, have drawn attention to a different side of the controversial party leader.
“The complexity of immigration requires nuanced solutions,” Tenconi stated in a recent press release. “While we stand firmly against illegal migration, we must also remember our humanitarian obligations, as demonstrated by our support for Ukraine.”
Local police have announced increased presence around the Bargate area during the demonstration, with officials urging all participants to protest peacefully. The event marks the latest in a series of UKIP-led demonstrations across the UK, as the party continues to campaign on its platform of stricter immigration controls.
As Southampton braces for Thursday’s demonstration, the city council has urged residents to go about their daily activities as normal while remaining mindful of potential disruption in the city centre. Traffic diversions are expected around the Bargate area from noon onwards.
The demonstration is scheduled to last approximately three hours, with speakers including local UKIP representatives and party officials. Counter-protesters have vowed to maintain a presence throughout the duration of the event.
