As the festive season draws closer, thoughts turn to cosy family gatherings and time spent with loved ones. But for the homeless dogs and cats at Blue Cross Southampton, a warm family home is the one thing missing from their Christmas wish list. This December, the charity is urging the public to open their hearts—and their homes—to animals still waiting for a place to call their own.
Among the hopefuls is Arnold, a six-year-old Beagle whose tail never stops wagging when people are nearby. After spending over 70 days in the care of Blue Cross, Arnold has become a favourite with the team, known for his affectionate nature and love of training sessions that are kept short and sweet. This cuddly hound is happiest by your side—whether curled up on the sofa, sniffing out scents on a walk, or joining you for a ride in the car. Blue Cross say he would suit experienced owners familiar with hounds or scent-driven dogs. Arnold can walk with calm canine companions, though he finds introductions a little daunting and will need gentle guidance to build his confidence.
Jess, a 10-year-old cat, has been waiting for a new home for nearly two months. She can often be spotted perched in her favourite windowsill spot, watching the world go by and greeting staff with a soft meow as they pass. Once she trusts you, Jess will curl up in your lap and soak up every head rub you have to offer. Her carers say she’s made huge strides, but a calm and quiet environment would suit her best. Ideally, her new family will have a quiet area set aside so she can settle at her own pace.
“In recent years, we’ve seen an increase in the number of pets coming through our centre doors in search of a new home. Pets like Arnold and Jess deserve to find the perfect family, and while our teams are delighted to care for them, the rise in animals needing help means the charity urgently needs support,” said Rhiannon Orris, Assistant Centre Manager at Blue Cross Southampton. “That’s why we launched our Critical First Night Christmas appeal, asking for donations to help teams provide safety and comfort for vulnerable pets in our care.”
Supporters can make a real difference this Christmas by donating to help provide Critical Care Kits, which include everything an animal needs during their first night: pain relief, antibiotics, warm blankets, and nutritious food. Donations of £10, £20, or £30 could go a long way toward easing the transition for pets like Arnold and Jess as they wait for their second chance.
